How he went viral
Know Your Meme tracked the first days: on 19 September a street clip set to La Fève's "FINIS-LES" passed 1.5 million TikTok views in three days, and a Paris park clip set to Nelly's "Dilemma" passed 5.6 million. Within three days his Instagram had nearly 150,000 followers. EarlyGame reports one clip at 35.9 million views. VRT counted almost 270,000 TikTok and 240,000 Instagram followers in under a month.
Part of the pull was the question itself. Commenters argued for days about whether he was real, and Dutch children's news ran a "real or AI?" check on him. People pointed out he had no online presence before September 2026.
So is he AI?
Yes, as far as anyone has reported. VRT reached the creator, who said: AI "certainly plays a role" in the process, but the videos "are not fully AI-generated" and involve a lot of human creative work. The creator has not shown their face or name.
Copycats and the toc toc wave
Rival characters followed, such as "Archibald Brown", presented as his English rival. In October, AI clips of Jean Phil-style men doing the toc toc dance (a one-foot hop and a knock on an invisible door, to Patrick Sébastien's 2015 song "Toc toc") spread under #jeanphil and #jeanphildance. No outlet we found has explained how the two trends merged.
